Odia Ofeimun The Christian Association of Nigeria has expressed concern over the failure of the Federal Government to rescue the over 200 promising Nigerian schoolgirls five weeks after they were abducted by members of the Boko Haram sect. CAN National Secretary, Dr. Musa Asake, in a telephone interview withSaturday PUNCH, also expressed worry over the psychological trauma the schoolgirls must have been passing through in the hands of their abductors. He, however, called for fervent prayers for the girls and their abductors to have a change of heart. Describing the situation as complicated and uncalled for, the CAN secretary urged Nigerians to always embrace peace and shun actions or efforts that could further aggravate the country’s security challenges. It will be recalled that the Boko Haram insurgents stormed Government Secondary School, Chibok, on April 14 and seized 276 female students in their hostel. The insurgents, clad in military uniform, told the girls that they came to rescue them from being attacked. The abductors drove the girls to unknown destination, but some of the girls escaped. The Federal Government has, however, accepted offer by foreign powers such as the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France and China to assist in rescuing the girls. But despite the combined effort of the foreign powers, the schoolgirls are yet to be rescued. Meanwhile, a poet and social commentator, Odia Ofeimu, has called for support for the Federal Government to tackle the menace of the militant group, Boko Haram. He described terrorism as a mindless business that must be fought by every patriotic individual. The poet toldSaturday PUNCHon the telephone that if the over 200 girls abducted in their school must be found, the Federal Government and its foreign collaborators must be supported. He said, “Terrorism is not always easy to tackle, even the western powers with their level of sophistication will require much effort to tackle terrorism. That a country is being confronted by terrorist activities does not mean that the government of the country is ineffective.” Ofeimu, however, expressed concern that the report of the abduction was overblown by foreign media.
