Raphinha Signs New Barcelona Deal Until 2028 After Historic Season

 Barcelona winger Raphinha has committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension that will keep him at Camp Nou until June 30, 2028. The Brazilian star put pen to paper on Thursday following what has been one of the most spectacular individual seasons in recent memory.

Originally contracted until 2027, Raphinha’s renewal adds another year to his stay, signaling the club’s strong belief in his importance to their ongoing project under newly re-signed coach Hansi Flick.

The 28-year-old was instrumental in Barcelona's incredible domestic treble-winning campaign, helping the team lift La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. With 34 goals and 25 assists in just 56 appearances across all competitions, Raphinha is even being touted as a Ballon d'Or contender.

His Champions League performances were especially noteworthy—he currently sits as joint top scorer with 13 goals. That included a stunning hat-trick in the group stage against Bayern Munich and a brace in the recent El Clásico triumph over Real Madrid, which all but sealed the La Liga title for Barça.

Despite a semi-final exit to Inter Milan in the Champions League, Raphinha’s heroics on the European stage have cemented his place among the continent’s elite attackers.

The timing of his renewal comes just a day after head coach Hansi Flick also extended his stay until 2027. The club is clearly focused on stability, with plans to also secure the future of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old is expected to sign a new deal in the coming weeks, according to his agent Jorge Mendes.

Together, Raphinha and Yamal have formed a fearsome wing partnership, flanking veteran striker Robert Lewandowski in a high-powered Barça attack. The team has scored an impressive 99 goals in 37 La Liga matches, and they'll be aiming to break the 100-goal mark this weekend in their final league match against Athletic Bilbao.

Raphinha, who joined the Catalan club from Leeds United in 2022 for around £55 million, helped them

win La Liga in his debut season. Although rumors swirled last year about a potential departure after a challenging campaign, it was Flick's arrival and vision that ultimately convinced him to stay.

With this extension, Barcelona have locked down a key figure as they aim to build on this season’s success and reestablish their dominance in Europe.

UNICAL graduates 7,769 students at 35th convocation

 The University of Calabar will graduate 7,769 students during its 35th convocation holding on Friday and Saturday. Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of the institution, disclosed on Monday in Calabar while enumerating activities lined up for the week long convocation. Obi said that Friday was for the award of first degrees, diplomas, masters and post graduate and also induction into UNICAL alumni for those found worthy in character and learning. She explained that Saturday was scheduled for award of doctorate and honorary degrees to deserving students and awardees. According to her, Thursday has also been scheduled for the investiture of the 6th Chancellor of the institution, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, the Emir of Kano. The Vice Chancellor said that the convocation lecture would be delivered by Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari. She said that the convocation topic is “The Leadership and Followership Question in Nigeria: Imperative or Ethical Re-Orientation. “For the 35th convocation of our university, we are happy to announce that 11 students made first class, 899 students made second class upper, 3,396 graduated with second class lower, while 721 got third class. “Also, we have 519 students for doctorate degree, 1,078 for masters and 556 for post graduate diploma and others. “For our sandwich programme, 162 students made second class upper, while 251 made second class lower,” she said. The VC also announced that the senate of the university accepted three personalities for the award of honorary doctorate (honoris causa) degrees. She said they include; Dr Goodluck Jonathan, former President of Nigeria, Mrs Winifred Akpani, Chief Executive Officer of Northwest Petroleum and Ms Tola Johnson, a business woman and an advocate of women and youth empowerment. She described Jonathan as a humble gentleman who places Nigeria above any other personal consideration, referring to him as a unifying factor in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. She commended staff and students of the institution for their support for her administration, adding that the university under her leadership would continue to strive for academic excellence and quality research.

Why FG Scrapped Post-UTME, Femi Adeshina Reveals

The special adviser to the President on media
and publicity, Femi Adesina, has revealed that
the decision by the government to scrap post-
UTME was informed by the need to make
admission into tertiary institutions less
cumbersome.
Adeshina disclosed this on Monday at Effurun,
Delta State when he bagged an award from the
students of Four Square Gospel Fellowship of
Federal University of Petroleum Resources,
(FUPRE).
The Special Adviser, who was represented by
Mr Emmanuel Ogoigbe, thanked the students
for considering him for the award. He,
however, urged the students to take their
studies seriously since that was the only way
they can become useful to themselves and the
society.
He said: ”I wish to express my profound
gratitude for considering me for this award. It
is indeed a worthwhile honour. As you all
know the nation is going through a process
championed by President Mohammadu Buhari,
whose tireless effort to redeem Nigerians from
the shackles of oppression, corruption and all
forms of criminality should be encouraged by
all Nigerians.”

JAMB Proposed Model For Screening Of Recommended Candidates

The Joint Admission And Matriculation Board held a meeting at the B.O Ukeje Auditorium, Nation Commission for colleges of Education, Central Business District Abuja on Tuesday 28th, 29th and 30th to map out admission screening modalities for Colleges of education, polytechnics and Universities.

The meeting was chaired by the permanent secretary ministry of education, Dr. Shade Yemi-Esan.

After evaluating the screening models of some schools in previous years and other factors surrounding the admission processes in tertiary institution in the country, JAMB released a proposed model for the screening of recommended candidates.

PROPOSED JAMB MODEL FOR SCREENING OF RECOMMENDED CANDIDATES

1. Screening of candidates shall be for ONLY candidates recommended for admissions.

2. No written examination to be conducted.

3. Verification of Course Requirements (O’ levels or A’ levels).

4. Verification of valid JAMB results by checking:
i. Online Result Slip
ii. Printout
iii. Provisional Admission Letter
iv. Photo Album
v. Checklist
vi. Biometrics

5. Institutions are free to source from other Course(s) to
compensate for SHORTFALL in any of the criteria.

Note:
The list of candidates that have scored above the minimum cut-off mark, and are NOT admitted may be forwarded to
other institutions that need them for consideration. Especially their Second (2nd) Choice institutions of preferences.
